Iowa One
Call is a statewide program that provides contractors, homeowners, and others
who may be excavating, digging or trenching with a single toll free number to
call for locating and marking underground facilities. The toll free Iowa One
Call number is 1-800-292-8989.
Iowa law states that if you are
excavating, including digging, you must call Iowa One Call at least 48 hours in
advance of your digging in order to minimize the risk of damaging any type of
underground facilities (electric, gas, telecommunications, cable television,
water and sewer). This service is free, and so is the telephone call. This law
is designed to protect both the digger and the utility, so make the telephone
call and avoid an accident.
Call anytime:
1-800-292-8989
Homeowners and casual excavators can reach Iowa One
Call anytime, day or night. Iowa One Call operators stand by 24 hours a day, 7
days a week. The Iowa One Call service is free to anyone who requests it, as is
the telephone call to reach the Iowa One Call Center. The cost of this service
is paid in full by anyone who operates underground facilities. The One Call
system monitors the calls and notifies utilities. If a utility has an
underground line in the area where the digging is to take place, they must mark
that area.
There are two exceptions where it is not necessary to call
One Call. If you have a garden that you work in year after year, there's no
need to check with One Call before replanting. If you are digging a new garden
plot, however, you need to call. Also, for farmers who are doing their day to
day operations such as plowing, cultivating, planting and harvesting, it is not
necessary to call unless you expect to be going deeper than 15 inches into the
soil.
Be aware that there are peak periods when call volumes are the
highest. Monday is the busiest day to reach Iowa One Call, and the busiest
times are from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Therefore,
consider calling during the non-peak calling periods.

How accurate are
the markings? Underground facility operators mark the horizontal

markings are in close proximity to actual utility locations. However, you
should not dig within 18 inches on either side of the flag or paint marking
line unless you have determined the precise location of the underground
facility.
What happens if my project is delayed? If weather
or construction delays cause your project to be postponed after your site has
been marked and the markings have not been preserved, be sure to call back toll
free to Iowa One Call for relocating and remarking of the
site.
Remember...T.I.P. would rather re-mark a site than repair it.
Emergency Situation If you have an emergency situation,
please inform Iowa One Call with the details. An emergency situation is when
locates are needed immediately (in less than 48 hours). The following are
considered emergency situations:
